SORRY! Off the air until April 20th!

Hey Everyone!

Good news: We've made it successfully to China, flying from Manila to Shanghai and now off to Beijing.

China is amazing so far and very different than all of the other places we've so far been to. For instance this is the first time we've really had a language barrier issue like no other. Basically no one speaks any English here which makes communication kinda difficult.

Now the Bad News: Google Vs. China. If you haven't all heard yet Google is in the midst of a huge battle with China over censorship and other issues and because of that it looks like Google will be pulling out of China very shortly. Already there are major issues with Gmail and Blogger both owned and controlled by Google, for which departing(YYZ) is hosted with. Thus because of this I probably won't be able to post until we leave China for Hong Kong on April 20th since its effectively being blocked by China or Google is blocking it in retaliation. Either way no dice for departing(YYZ) and no way to post our travels through Borneo and the Philippines.

Anyway, sorry to all for the long wait but if I can beforehand I'll post, otherwise look out for a whole slew of posts after April 20. So be patient, thanks for reading, come back and get out and travel!

The Singapore Zoo | Singapore

(A Travel Experience)  |  (Part 2 of 2)

On February 16th to 18th we walked the streets of Singapore, a clean, modern, efficient microcosm of the West situated in South East Asia. It’s a place completely unlike the rest of its regional neighbours, separated by wealth, connected by culture. Made up of a mix between ethnic Indians and Chinese like Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, it’s an expensive city with few sights but offered us a a nice escape from the often chaotic and polluted streets that characterized most of the rest of SE Asia. Here we simply walked the streets, admired the architecture, and of course visited the world famous zoo before flying off with Airasia back to Malaysia to the city of Kuching in Sarawak on the island of Borneo.

Malaysian Big Mac Challenge | McDonald’s Break

(McDonald’s Break)

As McDonalds inhabits literally every country in the world, we thought for scientific purposes it would be interesting to see what each McDonalds looks like in each country we visit, and if we’re desperate…and I mean desperate, try the unique dish found solely in each respected country.

Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia

(A Travel Experience)

On February 13th to 15th we flew from Phuket Thailand to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Here we met up with Sarah’s cousin Elyse and stayed a couple of days to see the Petronas Towers and the Batu Caves before leaving peninsular Malaysia behind and heading to Singapore.

Phuket: Leaving Thailand, entering Phuket | Thailand

(A Travel Experience)

From February 10th to 13th we stayed in the tourist hive of Phuket, saved by our luxurious accommodation and a little home cooking, we checked out a couple beaches, played with a monkey and enjoyed the sleazy night life all while semi-successfully avoiding the excessive tourist pricing that had fully taken over Patong Beach, the busiest and most populated area of Phuket island.

One of my favourite parts of SE Asia are the enumerable amount of rolling fruit stands on the streets. Serving freshly cut fruit, watermelon, pineapple, apple, mango, guava, papaya, honeydew and often other fruits completely foreign to me, there usually stored on ice and on a hot day (which is basically every day) are a great snack instead of your usual street fried foods.

A Jungle Voyage to the Half-Moon Party, Ko Pha Ngan | Thailand

(A Travel Experience)  |  (Part 2 of 2)

From February 2nd to the 4th we came back by bus to Bangkok for our third jaunt to meet up with Sarah at the airport. While she arrived on time after her long flight from Toronto to Tokyo and then on to Bangkok, her bag didn’t and she spent much of the next few days on the phone with United Airlines trying to locate and secure her bag. While we waited for her baggage to eventually show up (it was in Chicago) we explored the city a bit further, including checking out the the Golden Seated Buddha before we finally headed south to relax and swim on the beautiful tropical island of Ko Pha Ngan.
